The Western Lineage

Listen to the Editorial Conversation for this chapter:

The dominant Western lineage is textual by nature. Few contemporary Western practitioners have studied with advanced practitioners, few have experienced tea in its place of origin, and few have the cultural background to interpret the motifs and tertiary meanings within wares – most western practitioners have learned their knowledge and technique from books[1] or blogs.

The textual lineage competes with the phenomenist anti-textual lineage; practitioners of the textual lineage “know” knowledge without experience. The transmission of knowledge is limited within the Western practice, yielding few advanced practitioners. The principal of GeWu has been lost to a trust of what we are sold.
